Hugh B Eastburn III was a 1st Lieutenant in the USMC. He was killed in action on February 1, 1944, on the Marshall Islands.
Hugh B Eastburn III was born in Bristol, Pa February 26, 1920. He attended All Saints School in Torresdale; Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia and graduated from the South Kent School in Kent, Connecticut.
A year in France studying French, Eastburn graduated from Brown University in 1942 and immediately entered the Marine Corps, beginning his officer training at Quantico, Virginia, where he was commissioned a Lieutenant in October 1942, and, shortly thereafter, married Nancy Farr. Their only child, Nancy was born of this union.
Lieutenant Eastburn was with the Joint Assault Signal Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment, 4th Marines when the Division hit the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. He was killed in action on February 1st, 1944…. just 22 days short of his 24th birthday.
His hopes to be one of the “new generation” that is dedicated to improving our great democracy, was extinguished in one frightful moment.
His love of all living creatures and his fellow man set him a cut above the ordinary person. That his final resting place is in the National Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii our 50th state, is a fitting tribute to one of America’s great.
We of the Hugh B Eastburn III Detachment, Marine Corps League, are proud to bear his name and it is our privilege to bring honor in whatever way we can to an honorable name…Hugh B Eastburn…Marine.
